Solar Decathlon Europe Competition 2014. SymbCity House Project.

In this post we will comment on some of the most notable aspects of the project SymbCity House, presented by the Plateau Team in the international university competition known as Solar Decathlon Europe to evaluate the construction of prototypes of highly energy efficient and sustainable homes, in which the juries will evaluate and score each proposal by means of ten tests that will be carried out in situ to verify to what extent the proposed objectives are achieved, so that the final phase will take place during the month of June in Versailles.

The initiative SymbCity House It has been forged around the current city due to the continuous growth of cities and their continuous expansion in recent years, and which constitutes the main challenge that must be faced both in Spain and in other European countries, so that with It is intended to implement or create a new urban model based on the called compact or complex city as a form of sustainable city that makes the most of its own resources.

Some highlights of the initiativeSymbCity House:

It is intended to generate a eco-efficient city Through the development and implementation of a sustainable and environmentally friendly urban growth model, on the current model of city that is characterized by presenting inefficient or sustainable buildings that waste or lose a large amount of energy.

It is intended to achieve the improvement of the urban context in our country, so that the objective of action is aimed at those areas with buildings of greater energy poverty that have older homes and that require a new conditioning to improve their energy efficiency , given its current precariousness in this regard.

To achieve this objective, in a way that allows this integration between the existing building and the new efficient home, a symbiosis is generated that aims to solve the problems that these urban centers present today, through the creation of high-efficiency housing modules that would be incorporated by attaching them to the roof of said current buildings.

In this way, it is intended to act to achieve a complete transformation of cities that allows this change to be carried out through the implantation of new homes over the current ones, and that may lead to a change towards a new, more sustainable city model, which It requires the execution of a higher level in the buildings that could be used for different uses, not only for homes but also to house any type of premises for another use or any installation.

In the next video some of the notable aspects of the SymbCity project by the Plateau Team.

The financing of said project could be carried out through the income obtained through the sale of said homes, premises or spaces, thus allowing the economic viability of the project that is articulated around a mutual benefit between both houses, the existing ones also called host dwellings and new ones, or guest dwellings.

The new homes to be built will have almost zero energy consumption, and the rest of the existing building will achieve at least a high energy rating B.

Characteristics of the new host home:

The project proposes that their structure be made independently of the current building on which it rests, using organic materials such as wood.

This new structural system is generated by increasing one meter to the outside for each facade of the host building, so that a new envelope is created with a new skin or facade that will leave an air chamber that allows to store heat in winter and reduce the energy demand of heating.

The houses of the new plant that is generated on the roof will be found hanging from a structure of wooden braces without supports, which will transmit all the loads directly to the ground, and therefore will not generate overload in the current building, an important aspect given that otherwise, in some cases, its execution would not be feasible.

According to the standard housing model or prototype, three different parts or areas will be generated in each of them, with a main room that includes the day rooms, such as the dining room, living room and bedroom, an intermediate space corresponding to a multifunctional room that acts as a patio or greenhouse and an area called a technical block where the wet rooms of the house are located.

Materials of its envelope and facilities:

It is a "type" dwelling that will consist of an envelope resolved by wooden panels with a mineral wool insulation core, 18 cm in total thickness, of great thermal and acoustic performanceThese panels will be used both for the façade and for other horizontal elements or roofs.

All the materials used in the construction of the houses will be respectful with the environment throughout their useful life, and with respect to the facilities they will present heating and air conditioning through the incorporation of a low temperature radiant ceiling, and will have equipment for monitoring to take full advantage of outdoor weather conditions.
