Caring for the environment is an activity that aims to guarantee life and the natural balance of planet Earth, ensuring the existence and health of living beings and the conservation of natural resources and promoting, in turn, the well-being of the future generations. It involves both adults and children, with no age range that prevents their contribution to caring for nature. All human beings live, develop and make use of the natural environment and, therefore, we all have the capacity and responsibility to take care of it.

In this way, there are various actions that ensure the protection of the environment, which we can adopt in our day to day and not only in our homes, but also in our workplace or study. Do you want to know what they are? In Green Ecologist we tell you some actions to take care of the environment at school.

Actions for the care of the environment within the classroom

To start, we show you some ideas for practices or actions for the care of the environment in the school, to do them in the classroom with the children:

  • Use of environmentally friendly school suppliesAlthough it is true that the application of new technologies is increasingly replacing the notebook and pencil, it is also true that, in schools, together with offices, these resources are most used and consumed. Therefore, it is convenient to know and prioritize products made in a sustainable way, such as notebooks made from recycled paper, refillable pens or paints made with natural materials.
  • Energy saving: efficient use of light is a basic tool for saving energy and we must not forget that energy production involves the exploitation of non-renewable resources, the emission of greenhouse gases and many other environmental damages, so , saving electricity is a highly relevant practice in caring for the environment. Simple actions, such as turning off those switches that are not being used, from light bulbs and lamps to the pilot lights on computer screens.
  • Saving water: Just as, in the case of energy, we must turn off the light when it is not being used, we must also try to close the tap when we do not need it, thus avoiding wasting one of our most precious resources.
  • Apply the 3R rule (Reduce, Recycle, Reuse): using only what is necessary and making the most of resources is one of the most important measures to take into account to ensure the care of the environment. We all like to have thousands of new pens, notebooks and backpacks, but yes, your old pens still paint, there are still leaves in your used notebooks and your backpack is spotless, why replace it? Here you can find more information about the 3Rs of ecology.
  • Reuse books: Another recommended activity to implement in schools is to give a new life to used books, facilitating the exchange of these between students of the same or different grade, or even promoting donations to the library of the center.

Environmental projects for schools

Another option is to adopt projects related to the environment and include them in the educational content that is taught at school, either in subjects related to the subject or even in those that, at first glance, seem not to be so linked, such as language classes (creating debates with an environmental theme) or in mathematical subjects, (calculating energy consumption or expenditure). There are many projects that can be incorporated, here are some examples of environmental projects for schools:

  • Creation of an herbalist: Detecting and investigating the native plants of the area and collecting samples including their characteristics favors knowledge of the environment and interest in nature.
  • Bird identification and nest building: As in the case of plants, knowing the birds around us, analyzing their habits and behaviors and even favoring their existence by building huts and nests can help generate an interest in the environment.
  • Composting plant: Composting tries to create organic compost from garbage or food scraps from the school canteen provides a different point of view about the waste that humans produce, its usefulness and the importance of separating the waste.

Practices for caring for the environment outside the classroom

Finally, we propose more actions to take care of the environment at school but this time, to caring for the environment outside the classroom with the school:

  • Sustainable transport: prioritizing the use of public transport or school bus to get to school instead of using the car individually avoids air and noise pollution due to traffic jams. Another option is to go on foot or by bicycle, in this way there is not only a benefit in favor of nature but also towards your health thanks to the practice of exercise.
  • Consumption of organic food: Many students eat imported food (from foreign companies) or of industrial origin on a daily basis in the school cafeteria. Replacing this type of product with organic, local or seasonal food, if not in its entirety, at least in part, benefits and favors small businesses and environmentally friendly production. This is something to take into account both for the day to day at school, as well as for outings, excursions and colonies or trips, because you can always look for options of places where they offer organic food or even take it.
  • Excursions and school outings: Promoting environmental education outside the classroom, through outings and excursions that put the student in contact with nature, is one of the best ways to educate the little ones about the need to care for nature and respect the environment. Activities such as recycling workshops, the reforestation of green spaces and the creation of school gardens can be very educational and fun techniques at the same time.

In addition, here below you will see a video in which we offer tips to apply in the day to day and take care of the environment, whether at school, work or at home.
