History Casa Batlló
The building was built in 1875 by Emilio Sala Cortés (1841-1920), an architect author of several buildings in Barcelona and province. Sala was also a professor at the School of Barcelona architecture, and he was one of Gaudí's teachers, whom he occasionally employed as a draftsman in his early apprenticeship.

In the history of the Batlló house there were different owners. The architect Casa Batlló was Emilio Sala Cortés (Professor at the school of Barcelona architecture and he was one of Gaudí's teachers). In 1903 the building was acquired by the industrialist Josep Batlló i Casanovas, a wealthy businessman who owned various textile factories in Barcelona.

He was married to Amàlia Godó i Belaunzarán, from the family of the counts of Godó, editors of the newspaper La Vanguardia, with whom he had five children. The couple lived on the main floor of the house until the death of both (in 1934 Mr. Batlló and in 1940 his wife), which was sold in 1954 by their children, installed in turn in other floors some of which have been inhabited to this day.
Batlló He bought the building for 510,000 pesetas, with the first intention of demolishing it and building a new one, although later he settled for reforming it and giving his particular touch to the interior design of the house. While he reserved the main floor, the rest he operated on a rental basis, as was customary in the bourgeois houses of the time (although he also gave some apartments to his children as they were getting married).

The building was located in theEixample of Barcelona, projected by Ildefonso Cerdá and approved in 1859, with a reticular system of blocks of flats with cut corners, with the provision of building on two sides and dedicating the rest to gardens, the latter point that was not finally carried out. With the Expansion, the Paseo de Gracia It became one of the main arteries of the city, for which it was chosen by the Catalan bourgeoisie to establish their residences, thanks to which this road grew rapidly and became a constructive hotbed where the best architects in Barcelona.
For the Batlló remodeling He entrusted the project to Antonio Gaudí, at that time an already renowned architect. The architect focused on the façade, the main floor, the interior light patio and the roof terrace, and raised a fifth floor for the services of the Casa Batlló by Gaudí (laundry and storage rooms) following its line modernist.

The Gaudí's project It underwent several modifications from its conception to its final realization, due to the continuous search for the best structural solutions by the architect.
In the first sketch, it showed an initial intention to crown the building with a sinuous cupola of irregular shape, which eventually became adragon shaped vault, which is the main hallmark of the building. Likewise, the tower with the four-armed cross that tops the roof was planned on the left side of the roof, but Gaudi moved it to the center so that it would not interfere with the staggered shot of the adjacent Amatller House, showing great respect for the work of his colleague Puig i Cadafalch.

The Casa Batlló It passed in inheritance in 1940 to the daughters of the Batlló-Godó marriage (Carmen and Mercedes), who sold it in 1954 to Seguros Iberia, which installed its commercial offices there. In 1984 the electric lighting of the façade was installed, inaugurated at the La Mercè Festival that year.
In 1993 it was acquired by the Bernat family, owners of the Chupa Chups company, who restored it and opened it commercially to the public, currently being an almost obligatory point of visit for any tourist.
The Casa Batlló was declaredHistorical-Artistic Monument of National Character in 1969, and since 2005 it is part of theUNESCO World Heritage Site, inside the "Works of Antoni Gaudí" place.
