Conscious recycling

The need to get involved in a conscious recycling.

The concept of "throwaway" is actually a decadence of the modern human being in the eyes of the earth. I suppose that the earth watches us as if you have Diogenes Syndrome altogether, accumulating waste in your house. Reality or not so much, it is true that modern societies, especially the so-called “urban” ones, are the ones that monopolize the greatest production of waste. Let's not look at the navel of developing countries or powers, which is another issue and that theoretically we should give them an example and help, let's look at our navel.

Let's put figures on the table to see what we are talking about … How much waste do we produce?

According to a report from the Environment - Year 2012 - each person generates 1.51 Kg of urban waste per day, which is the same as 551 kilograms of waste per person per year! The household waste that people usually generate are:

Gossip comments … "In times of crisis, garbage bags weigh less", understandable! But another attitude that is being verified is that over the years the content of garbage bags is changing, although organic waste continues to be the greatest weight, the percentage of plastic and electronic material is increasing considerably with a very suspicious trend and caused by a "Irresponsible consumption" where the goods to be used are more and more single-use or of poor quality and, therefore, low durability.

It must be taken into account that waste causes a problem as a whole, which not only affects the environment.

Not to mention how much we must endure until their degradation. In the article on colors in the types of garbage recycling we have all the detailed information on how we should recycle consistently.

There is a turning point that fascinates, that is, It has been shown that a legislative approach, toughening laws … etc. Not effective, it must of advocate more for a strategy that encourages shared responsibility and citizen participation, promoting the modification of certain behaviors and consumption habits to obtain better results.

So that we are aware of the aforementioned, there is a particular case study that will surprise more than one reader. A trial action in garbage collection was proposed to 81 Catalan municipalities with up to 200,000 inhabitants. 41 municipalities the garbage was collected door to door (In front of the house according to a calendar, each day of the week has a type of waste assigned and schedule established by the municipalities) and another 40 in containers.

For the comparison between both models, the indicator “global management cost per registered inhabitant” was used, understood as the sum of the collection and treatment costs, less income (from sale of materials, contributions from integrated management systems and return of the canon on the dumping and incineration of waste existing in Catalonia).

Global cost of management = Cost of collection + Cost of treatment - Income.

The door-to-door has a higher cost of collection per inhabitant, but this difference is compensated by a lower cost of treatment and higher income in the municipalities with this model.Of course, door-to-door waste collection requires citizen involvement and awareness for its achievement, the need for conscious recycling, but it is a reality that can be viable and beneficial.
