It is known as hurricane, in certain parts of the world, to a tropical cyclone. It is a storm system that has a closed circulation around a low pressure center and produces strong winds and abundant rain. Tropical cyclones are charged with energy by condensation of humid air. Depending on their strength and location, they are called a tropical depression, tropical storm, hurricane, typhoon (especially in Southeast Asia), or cyclone. Areas most at risk of hurricanes
Some regions of the planet are more prone to hurricanes, although climate change is changing the situation, as we were able to see with Hurricane Sandy, which reached New York. Hurricanes form at specific points in the oceans and have a trajectory that depends on the global climate system.
There are seven main areas at risk of hurricanesAccording to the Atlantico Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory, a US institution that monitors and analyzes tropical cyclones:
- North Atlantic (includes the North Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea)
- Northeast Pacific
- Pacific Northwest (includes the coast of Asia and the south of the China Sea)
- North Indian (the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea)
- Southwest Indian (African coast)
- Southeast Indian-Australian
- Australian-Southwest Pacific
Hurricane formation season
Most hurricanes form in a specific area and at a specific time. For this reason, they speak of the hurricane season. Typically, cyclones form at latitudes between 10 and 30º, both north and south. Hence its name: tropical.
The usual thing is that they form after the summer, since that is when the temperature of the ocean water is higher. The most active month (although always depending on the area and the year) is September. It should be noted that in the North Atlantic region the season is different: it runs from June 1 to November 30, approximately. Its greatest intensity is also at the end of summer, at the end of August and in September.
The northeast Pacific Ocean, for its part, has a longer period of activity. The Northeast Pacific has tropical cyclones throughout the year, although the peak of activity occurs in early September. In the North Indian Ocean, storms are most numerous from April to December, with peaks in intensity in May and November.
