The architecture of the senses that captivates and excites

Is it possible for architects or designers to create architecture for the senses? An architecture that literally excites the five senses (hearing, smell, touch, taste, sight) and at the same time enlarge the imagination of the spectator.

Throughout history, a multitude of great architects have persistently sought the thrill with architecture, highlighting the encounter between the viewer and that architectural element. Countless are the cases that involuntarily or willingly have found that symbiosis to excite or enchant the viewer.

Architecture that thrills

As an example, if we look back and look at Luis Barragán, one of the great Mexican architects and winner of thePritzker Architecture Prize in 1980, many experts attributed the denomination of"Emotional architecture" where his projected spaces harmoniously conjugated almost perfectly the different planes of light, textures and colors to the amazement of the public in his famous Giraldi house (1976).

Here it is shown that spaces can seduceInstead of using architecture as an element to impress, which apparently - in our opinion - is the scourge of current designers. A example of emotional architecture from Luis Barragán:

If we move in search of that architecture that can affect the senses In a forceful way, in search of those spaces that captivate, I think that it should first deserve to reread some forgotten pages of the Heraldo de Aragón Newspaper.

"The chronicles about the role of the five senses in architecture"

The professors of the School of Architecture of the San Jorge University, Ángel Comeras and Jesús Marco, together with the person in charge of the Dto. of Culture of the COAA, Carlos Buil published a series of articles over several years in the newspaper Heraldo de Aragín in the Art & Letters section.

The series consists of as many articles as there are senses, that is to say, five, which have been successive and that seek to illustrate and raise how each of the senses is present and in what way in the architectural discipline. The architecture that surprises!

Spaces in emotional architecture

Very few months ago, the Royal Academy of Arts commissioned seven architectural studios to create specific installations to explore the essential elements of architecture and their influence from the perspective of the human encounter and highlight the way in which sight, touch, sound and memory plays a fundamental role in the perception of space, proportions, materials and light. The exhibition was called "Sensing Spaces: Architecture Reimagined."

Instead of representing buildings in the form of models, plans or photographs, the exhibition immersed visitors in a multisensory experience through different facilities.

Explanatory document of what was the exhibition and its different sensory installations HERE.

"My house is my refuge, an emotional piece of architecture, not a cold piece of convenience. I believe in emotional architecture, it is very important for human beings that the architecture is moved by its beautyI know that there are many technical solutions to a problem, but the most valid of them is the one that offers the user a message of beauty and emotion. This is architecture. ”… By Luis Barragán.
