How to convert an industrial crane into luxury spaces

From industrial crane in port to luxury spaces

Transform, reuse or recycle are words on the lips of many modern architects and designers who seek to understand architecture from another perspective, to excite and surprise the observer with those spaces that once had functionality and that now emerge as true jewels of modern architecture . We are talking about the remodeling work of the Arcgency architecture studio, converting an old industrial crane in the port of Copenhagen into a luxurious space for enjoyment.

In the middle of an industrial landscape of the port on the outskirts of Nordhavn (Copenhagen - Denmark) where iron rules over brick and concrete, a singular old black crane emerges that once loaded and unloaded coal ships as an icon of urban renovation thanks to the concerns of its owner Klaus Kastbjerg, in one of the ports under renovation of the capital of Denmark.

Named the Krane, a unique project that was commissioned to the Arcgency studio that wanted to maintain the essence and purity of the industrial crane on the outside and combine a luxurious interior design and detail. It has a multi-level interior that includes a spa, meeting room, bedroom and different outdoor terraces amidst an intoxicating atmosphere.

The color black has been used as a clearly identifying element of its dark past with charcoal, promoting a feeling of calm and serenity within a structure with different levels.

The first level we can identify a reception area that seems to be made of a reused transport container, a second level where we find a whole floor where there is a fully glazed meeting room with impressive views, a set of stairs takes us to the third level we find a spa with generous windows, two bathrooms, a shower and a terrace at ground level.

The last level is reserved for the private area for a couple measuring 50 square meters, which includes a living room area, double bed, bathroom and a dining table. the kitchen is hidden within a storage unit and the bedroom also its own outdoor terrace.

In addition to its allusions to charcoal, the color black plays a critical role in minimizing and silencing visual distractions so that people feel enveloped inside (We can understand more about the effects of color in spaces here). At the same time, the black dramatizes the changing light and the stunning views outside. For Møller from the Arcgency studio, black is not just black… “There are hundreds of different shades of black in this impressive structure. Depending on the time of day, you can have different subtle nuances. "

Quality wood, stone, leather and steel. They are just some of the noble materials that you will see in the furniture, designs and decoration details.

Not only is the furniture custom-made to fit the dimensions and concept, the interior is built so that the primary pieces disappear. Beds, seats and cabinets are integrated into the wall panels and other hidden functional pieces. It is a constant discovery, where objects are turned into sculptures in an impressive still life. Everything is handcrafted to honor Denmark's mastery of craftsmanship.
