Solar cold a rising concept

The solar cold, characteristics and functionalities in the face of Energy Efficiency.

In most cases we have the concept or we relate the sun directly to heating or heat but… and if we change the guidelines, and if we look for cold. Uniting and taking advantage of both cold + heat concepts we can achieve substantial savings in our home.

At present it is estimated that between 20 and 25% of the energy consumed in the home is used for air conditioningWell, we are going to try to reduce and alleviate this point based on the sun.

We want to clarify that one issue is renewable policies in Spain, which I think we all know by now and which are obviously making it difficult directly to implement and take advantage of a common good such as the Sun, and another that there are effective tools to obtain benefits.

Obtaining solar energy to produce cold heat in two ways:

A.- Solar energy collected by the photovoltaic modules to activate the cold generation equipment. (We are not telling anything new)

B.- Solar energy collected by solar collectors that directly produce thermal energy at low or medium temperature. (It is the one that interests us)

Focusing on point B, and to clarify the initial concept, the idea is very simple:

A more Sun = More air conditioning in Cold = More spending on electricity

The goal is to break the chain, or rather take advantage of that energy from the Sun that is greater at the moment that we need more electricity to obtaincold.

If I take advantage of this objective, in addition to reducing energy expenditure, I will be able to "decongest" the electricity grid, I use renewable energy, use a single equipment for Heating, ACS and AA, and I optimize the solar installation that I have.

There are already different manufacturers that offer “everything” in the same equipment, that is, the system replaces conventional air conditioning and heating equipment powered by non-renewable energy sources with a drastic reduction in CO2 emissions.

How does solar cold work?

To understand it quickly, I advise you to access this interactive infographic … HERE. Where we can see an example of an installation in action; Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn. (Let's also remember that at the time we made an interesting information post«Infographics on renewable energy«)

The facilities are based on three points:

  • A.- Capture circuit of solar energy, be it solar panels, biomass boilers … etc. This energy will be what is stored and feeds the system that will produce cold.
  • B.- Distribution circuit: Normally a radiant circuit (Floor and / or Ceiling) is used in the form of distribute hot / cold energy. Although you can also use Fan Coils … etc.
  • C.- Dissipation circuit: That machine that produces cold, what it really does is “steal” the heat from inside the Building.

At present we can already find on the market a multitude of equipment that offers this system, both for single-family houses and buildings of all types. From what we have been able to observe on the Internet, they are not cheap equipment but technology advances, the market is expanding and obviously they will be more and more accessible to consumers.
