Benefits of green and ecological building
One thing is clear to us, we must respect nature and the environment if we want to have a more sustainable and promising future. Among the different strategies that we can consider to advance coherently, is the greener building constructions o respect the environment and its occupants.
But how do buildings and homes affect the environment? To give us an idea, in the following graph we see the common sources of greenhouse gases that affect us directly, and, mainly, in cities:
Most companies, come to the ‘green building‘As a luxury of high costs in materials, facilities, and even in design, to comply with LEED standards in buildings (Leader in Energy Efficiency and Design), for example.
One of the drawbacks tested in society is that it is not explained adequately what are the advantages of green buildings versus traditional construction. But…
Why is green building construction necessary? Buildings, including the resources used to create them, the energy, materials, and water needed to build and operate them, have a significant effect on the environment, the environment, climate change, and human health.
On average, as indicated in this report, buildings are responsible for the following:
- They are responsible for 14% of drinking water consumption.
- They are responsible for 30% of waste production.
- They are responsible for 40% of the use of raw materials.
- They are responsible for 38% of carbon dioxide emissions.
- They are responsible for 24% to 50% of energy use.
- They are responsible for 72% of electricity consumption.
True, those costs are real, but what about the economic benefits they produce to owners and occupants? …
From the perspective of buildings and understanding their benefits, in the following article we can see a perfect example of architecture on a green building that really amazes the observers.
We can list some green building advantages:
- Higher market value, since they are in greater demand, they are constructions of higher quality, and they are scarce. For aowner of a LEED-certified (office and / or commercial) building operated for rent, business benefits will come primarily from higher rents, with better rental and occupancy rates, at lower risk. For theoccupants, will provide a ‘green public image’, will have lower operating and maintenance costs, higher employee productivity, and lower risk as well.
- Lower costs. The savings generated by a building that operates with less energy, and that requires less maintenance, will serve to amortize the cost of making the building sustainable.
- Higher earnings. Being more in demand, these buildings have lower vacancy rates (3.5%), but also their rental income is 13% higher than those of Non-LEED buildings. To this income should be added those from ahigher employee productivity *, which contributes an impact of € 215 / m2.
- The happiest occupants. Environmental awareness matters and people's health, even more, are buildings designed to improve people's health.
- They are buildings that cost less to maintainr. Since construction is designed to be cost-efficient, monthly bills are drastically reduced. An important advantage for many families.
- Provide immediate results. Once the building is built, the benefits are immediate; savings, health, etc. You don't need a long-term strategy.
- They improve the environment. Since they have been designed to optimize resources, they consume and produce less material so they need fewer resources from the environment for their operation while respecting the environment.
Today, the awareness of companies is gradually changing in favor of a more sustainable building and with lower costs in the useful life of the Building. And, of course, also in its occupants, an example is the trend of having gardens inside homes and we can see it in the article on vertical gardens in homes and buildings.
