Cities with the highest visual pollution

Visual pollution may not be as harmful as atmospheric pollution, or at least not as obvious. However, among other negative consequences, it does not allow a good rest, which, in the long run, affects people's health. Something similar happens with noise pollution: noise can cause you to fall asleep poorly and, the next day, to be tired.

It is not easy to calculate which cities suffer the most from visual pollution. Although what is clear is that they are large cities with huge illuminated signs, lighted billboards and tall buildings with their lights on. The skylines Postcard looks great in photographs, but they are not environmentally friendly.

Thus, most of the cities most polluted by lights are in North America. As a paradigm, we have New York. In fact, the lights of the city that never sleeps (pun intended) are one of its hallmarks.

Other cities that widely exceed the light limits are some of the most populated cities on the planet, such as Shanghai, Mexico D.F. or Bombay. Next, in Green Ecologist we present you the cities with the highest visual pollution.

The United States, the country with the most visual pollution

According to images taken by NASA from the International Space Station, there are overly bright cities all over the world, many of them the capitals or the most important cities of the country: Zurich (Switzerland), Milan (Italy), Madrid and Barcelona (Spain), Athens (Greece), Antwerp (Belgium), London (United Kingdom), Paris (France), called the City of Light; Cairo (Egypt), Tel Aviv and Jerusalem (in the Middle East), Riyadh and Jiddah (Saudi Arabia), Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), Hong Kong (China), Tokyo and Nagoya (Japan), Sao Paulo (Brazil) , Mexico City, El Paso and Ciudad Juárez (Mexico).

But the record like country with the most visual pollution takes it U.S: of course, New York, but also Phoenix, San Francisco, Miami, Houston, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., all the way to the city that holds (proudly) the record for the brightest city in the world … Las Vegas.

How much energy, money and carbon emissions would be saved if all these cities were less bright?
