Living architecture is capable of breaking inequalities

The architecture current has an overwhelming challenge, the Social inequality, and therefore, 1st, 2nd … homes. 5th class that turn cities into "Wells of Architectural Inequality" where in the same city we can find next to the luxury building a group of barracks made of wood and practically unknown remains of materials.

Recently the Chilean architect Alejandro Aravena I participate in a conference on the prestigious channel TED showing that architecture can be a forceful participant in breaking down social inequalities in cities.

The growth of cities, where more than half of the world's population resides (and increasing), being economically and environmentally sustainable leads to more than one developer.

Although, in the face of a badly planned previous work, the solution goes through a transformation of what we already have, with an irremediably unequivocal conclusion, the need for the participation of the inhabitant in the new model that we want to reorganize and build.

If the intention is use of the city as a source of equality, and on the other hand, as a direct access to correct the de-sigual-da-des. At this point, the question of rigor assails us … How can we improve? With the daily problems of many cities, not to say a resounding statement, there is no money.

To try to answer that uncomfortable question in a coherent, sustainable way, seeking to improve people's quality of life, we must first remember a definition from Carlos Chiver, architect and founder of Cooperativa Diseño, who defines the concept of Living Architecture or Evolutionary Architecture… . “I can conclude that we are not creating life, we are building the opportunity for life to continue from us. We recognize that it is not an individual process, it is a collective process ". (Let us remember as a starting point the article … Living urbanism)

How can living architecture transform?

It may be many, you already know thisexample of living architecture, which transforms in time, but deserves a reminder for its trajectory in time. In this case, to understand the concept we must go back to a project called Elemental Iquique (Chile - Year 2001). The objective consisted in the remaining 93 fa-mi-lias in the place where they had been sitting in cu-cli-llas - deprived neighborhood - for the last 30 years, with a budget of only 6,000 per family with which to finance the purchase of the land, the employment of workers and the architecture of the infrastructure.

With the reduced budget of 6,000 Euros, only 30 m2 of housing were allowed to be built, which forced to build the basics. This is where the expertise of the developer, the architect and, if necessary, the study ELEMENTARY of which Alejandro Aravena is a part, acted to generate technical con-ditions that can guarantee an effective process of winning value over time. Housing modules that given small dimensions It forces the beneficiaries to be the ones who "dynamically" transform the mere housing solution into a home over time..

From the previous image, the first modulation was discarded according to the need to grow. A structure capable of growing should be provided in all their homes.

We can identify architectural growth based on the economic conditions of families that improve over time.

We believe that it is of interest to watch the following video, highly recommended to get to understand the process from the beginning and its evolution to the present, as well as being able to learn the concepts that were used to arrive at the idea of the Project. (Voice in Spanish)

We must remember that in recent years, society has become aware of the need to change the way we interact with the environment and cities. In the construction sector this translates into a commitment to sustainable and living architecture, which represents not only a trend towards the use of space in time, it also acts on society and the benefit of it by improving the quality of life.
