WEF Spain report improvement in the energy sector

Spain improves in the energy sector facing the world.

As every year THE WEF (World Economic Forum) makes a report called The Global Energy Architecture Performance Index (World Energy Architecture Performance Index). The objective of the Report is to classify and score the energy systems of 124 countries (Last year there were 105) from a economic, environmental and energy security perspective. It is also designed to help countries manage and address the challenges that arise during the projected period of change for energy supply through 2035 in order to meet growing global demand.

The report designates a ranking in which countries are located - worldwide - in terms of energy systems that contribute to economic growth. Some professionals in the sector predicted a drop in positions in the world rating based on current policies on energy efficiency, renewables … etc. But in this case, Spain surprises us again with the increase of one position, reaching Nº-8 after Colombia (last year we were located at Nº-9).

In obtaining the score of the WEF Report, many aspects are linked that are collected in three key points:

  1. How accessible is the energy provided, taking into account price distortions.
  2. Efficiency in the use of energy.
  3. If the forecast of this energy adds or detracts from the accounts of a country.

As we can see in the tables provided, we have decreased in economic growth and development of the energy sector, but we have grown in accessibility to energy compared to last year.. A curious issue - in my opinion - given that if access to the energy that reaches Spain is easier it will be "They should cut costs" and therefore the gas or electricity bill, however consumers continue to pay more at the end of the month…. The report presents a "Top Ten" of the first ten where an analysis of the current situation of each country is carried out, they inform us that Spain is the fifth largest consumer of energy in Europe and, thanks to the recent investment in wind energy and Solar, one of the region's largest producers of electricity from renewable energy. Despite its drive for renewable energies, Spain is a major consumer of fossil fuels as it has practically no national resources.

Another aspect to highlight of the Report is that in reality we have the same average score as last year 0.67. At this point we can think that based on the economic crisis the other countries are putting aside their energy policies in favor of "Other most relevant matters" or that the Lobbies of the large energy companies are doing a good job in favor of Spain.
