How to renovate a facade with 900 plastic chairs

How to change a facade with pure plastic and little money

Creativity is one of the most sought after aspects in architecture and if we talk about renovate building facadesSince, honestly, it is quite difficult to achieve a design that enhances the building, attracts the user and that also does not economically report a high cost in the renovation or rehabilitation of the facade.

In this case we have to move to the Czech Republic, to an old building for a car dealership that has been transformed into a wonderful office building using a very particular and unconventional material on its facade; 900 plastic chairs.

The culprits of this imaginative and original design is from the CHYBIK + Kristof studio on a commission for the furniture company MY DVA. The initial problem is that the building was already occupied by the new workers and they needed a quick rehabilitation and still cheap cost… Who does not want it !. It was about renovating a building from the 90s and turning it into an attractive showroom and workplace.

Faced with the initial problem, the design studio responded with the products that the furniture company manufactures, to use 900 plastic chairs that will cover the envelope of the entire office building on the outside. Not only was it an inexpensive and inexpensive product, but it was also easy to put on and represents a distinctive of the company itself that attracts the attention of passers-by and provides a natural publicity for the business.

The distribution of the Interior was based on two flexible spaces; a large showroom divided into three galleries to display school furniture, designer tables and office furniture, and another space for offices. (Interesting to see the best office designs in an article that reflects current trends and ideas for a proper distribution)

The colors used both outside and inside are pure black and white, monochromatic colors that provide simplicity and utility (See also how color affects architecture and works). Also use simple white curtains that form circles as separating and distributing elements of the different spaces.

According to the designers… “inspiration is based on three limited parameters; the first of course is the budget dedicated to reconstruction. The second is the time of use of the building given that they have a 10-year lease. And finally, the location of the building given that it is located on the outskirts of the city where they have little pedestrian traffic and we had to be able to enhance the magnitude of it to make it an icon in the area »

The envelope of the facade coated with 900 plastic seats It was built in less than a week with a price per square meter of approximately € 20. We only need imagination and originality to turn an everyday element into a material for architecture. And we can also see other examples of originality in facades such as:

  • A green facade with good design
  • When the facade is geometric and has a lot of color
  • How to clad a facade with a 3D printer
  • A facade with a lot of glass in architecture

And as the architect Arthur Erickson commented… “Great buildings that move the spirit have always been strange. They are unique, poetic, products of the heart.
