During 2016, some 20,000 new species have been cataloged, making a total of around 200,000 new species during the last decade, many of which are species that were already believed to be extinct. These data are collected and classified by the International Institute for Species Exploration (IISE) of the ESF (College of Environmental Science and Forestry) of the State University of New York.

New species of mammals discovered in the world

  • The olinguito:(Bassarycion haze) carnivore classified within the marsupial family, although it feeds mainly on fruit. The olinguito lives in several protected areas ranging from central Colombia to western Ecuador.
  • Araguaia river dolphin: (Inia araguaiaensis): a species of dolphin discovered in 2014 in the Araguai-Tocantis river basin in Brazil. It is a great discovery, since river dolphins are in danger of extinction. It has a larger skull than other river dolphins, but fewer teeth.
  • The Black-tailed Antequino: (Antechinus arktos): small insectivorous marsupial discovered in Australia in 2015. It has the peculiarity that the male produces such a quantity of hormones during the mating season that he stops eating and drinking, reaching the point of being able to die.
  • Peeled Face Saki by Pissinatti: (Pithecia pissinatti): Saki monkey species discovered in 2014 in the tropical forests of South America. It is a small primate that can jump up to 9 meters.
  • Dwarf lemur: (Microcebus myoxinus) species of small lemur discovered in 2014 and that lives only in the north of the island of Madagascar.

  • Limnonectes larvaespartus: species of frog discovered in 2014 on the island of Sulawesi (Indonesia). It has the peculiarity of giving rise to tadpoles directly in puddles of water, without laying eggs.
  • Kermit frog: (Hyalinobatrachium dianae) species of frog discovered in Costa Rica in 2015 and named Kermit for its resemblance to the Muppet frog. It is a species of amphibian that is characterized by the lack of pigmentation in its skin, so its internal organs can be partially observed through its belly.
  • Galapagos giant tortoise: (Chelonoidis donfaustoi) a species of tortoise discovered on one of the islands of the Galapagos archipelago (Ecuador) and named in honor of a former park worker.
  • Pinocchio frog: (Litoria sp.) amphibian discovered in 2008 2n Indonesia. He has a long nose that grows when he feels in danger.
  • Triturus ivanbureschi: species of strong salamander that reaches 13 cm in length.

  • City bird: species discovered in 2013 in the capital of Cambodia. It is characterized by its loud chirping.
  • Rinjani's Scopshot: (Otus jolandae) species of owl described in 2013 on one of the smaller Indonesian islands near the Lombok volcano.

Last invertebrate animals discovered

  • Keesingia gigas: species of jellyfish discovered in Australia, which can measure up to 50 cm without counting the tentacles. Its sting is very painful and can be fatal.
  • The gymnast spider: (Cebrennus rechenbergi) Arachnid described in 2014 and discovered in Morocco. Characterized by its great agility, being able to roll on itself and reach a speed of up to 2 meters per second.
  • The psychedelic slug: (Phyllodesmium acanthorhinum) species of gastropod discovered in Japan in 2014 that has very bright and attractive colors.
  • Bone House Wasp: (Deuteragenia ossarium) species of very dark wasp discovered in 2014 and characterized by hunting ants or spiders that it uses as parapets to protect its nests.
