To date, more than 20,000 species of bees are known, all of them with an essential task within ecosystems, the task of carrying out the pollination of some plants. In fact, it is estimated that 90% of wild plants and 75% of the crops that make up our food are pollinated by some species of bee. For this reason, their importance within ecosystems and all the ecosystem services that humans obtain from them is undeniable. However, it is true that sometimes bees can be a bit annoying, especially when they enter our home. In addition, we cannot ignore that the bites they leave are annoying and uncomfortable, and can even cause major problems for allergy sufferers.

Fortunately, there are some natural remedies and products that can be used to repel bees and other insects without causing harm. If you want to know how to scare away bees without killing themContinue reading this Green Ecologist article, in which we will list the most efficient remedies and tips.

Smoke

Smoke is a good ally when it comes to scare or stun bees. So much so, that beekeepers themselves use smokers to keep bees calm when they are manipulating the hives.

Given this, we recommend lighting candles and incense near the openings of your home to prevent bees from entering the house. You can also get a beekeeping smoker and place it in the outdoor area where you have a problem with too many bees.

Aromatic herbs

Aromatic herbs work very well as natural repellent for bees. Although aromatic herbs have a pleasant scent to humans, in reality many odors are unpleasant to bees and other insects. You just have to think about the strategic points where to place the pots with aromatic plants such as, for example, near windows and doors or in different parts of your garden or balcony. In fact, if you are looking to keep bees out of the pool, aromatic herbs are a great option, since you can place them near the pool to prevent them from approaching. If you wonder what aromatics can be used to scare away bees, these are: citrus geranium, citronella, lavender, basil, mint, peppermint and bay leaf, among others. Also, you can use many of these herbs for cooking. Incredible!

We recommend you to know these other articles in which we talk about citrus geranium or anti-mosquitoes and about 16 anti-fly plants, which will have the same or similar effect with bees.

Citronella candles

Citronella is an aromatic herb that can be used to scare away bees, mosquitoes and flies at home, as we mentioned in the previous section. However, there are citronella candles which are more effective than herbs, since they contain the citronella extract which repels insects in higher concentration.

In addition, the smoke released by the candle when lit, it helps scare away bees. However, we must consider that conventional candles are made of paraffin, a petroleum derivative that releases toxins when lit. Therefore, citronella candles are a not very ecological alternative compared to the use of aromatic herbs, unless you can find a citronella candle without paraffin or make it yourself at home.

Coffee

Although coffee has a beautiful aroma for us, for bees and other insects it is annoying and too strong. That is why coffee is one of the good home remedies for bees. You just have to find a container, such as a candlestick or ashtray, in which you can place the coffee and then turn it on. The smoke that is released is very effective in driving away bees. Of course, make sure you place the container in a suitable place.

Garlic

Garlic is also used as one of the best remedies against bees. It is recommended to use garlic powder and add it to a jar of spray with water. This way, it will be easy to spray it on plants or even near windows, doors or other openings. Unlike the other remedies described, garlic may not be pleasant for everyone and may even bother the animals we live with, such as cats and dogs.

Citrus

Both lemon and orange and other citrus fruits are effective in driving away bees. There are two effective ways:

  • The first is to arrange citrus peels at different points in your home or garden, precisely in those that you consider most appropriate.
  • The second option is to use a sprayer or lemon juice spray where you think is appropriate.

Naphthalene

Naphthalene is a chemical frequently used to repel moths. However, it can be used to repel other insects, such as bees and wasps. The advantage of this product is that it can be purchased in any store or supermarket.

However, it also has certain disadvantages, since naphthalene can be toxic if ingested or if it is touched and then we touch the eyes or mucous membranes, both for people and for domestic animals and also has a very intense smell. Therefore, if you decide using mothballs to repel bees and other insects, do it carefully and make sure that children and animals with whom you live cannot reach this product.

Avoid sweet smells

Another way to chase away bees from home, is to avoid the use of products with a sweet aroma. Therefore, from Ecologist Verde we advise you not to aromatize your home with sweet fragrances, since they strongly attract bees and other insects, such as flies. Also, bees are attracted to some fruits, especially those with a high sugar content, such as grapes. Therefore, avoid leaving food scraps inside your home or on the terrace or garden table.

At Ecologist Verde we insist on the great importance of driving away if necessary but not killing bees, since it has been shown that their population has been greatly reduced and that without them the entire planet would be seriously affected, including people and many resources that we depend on.
