The first neighborhood built with 3D printing technology

By now - I think - we all know that construction is being automated by leaps and bounds; from construction vehicles that work alone to robots that walk alone on the construction site looking for errors in the facilities, but the most important advances are being developed in the large 3D printers designed to build modular homes in series.

We already talked on our blog that 3D technology is capable of building a small house in 24 hours and this will mean, whether we like it or not, a radical change in the future of construction where companies must adapt if they want to compete in the market.

Obviously, the 3D construction provides two notable advantages; get cheaper housing and much faster construction. On this basis, we can start to set ourselves many goals, for example helping the homeless at relatively low cost.

In this case, the leading company in 3D technology for housing ICON and the New Story association (a non-profit association that fights so that all disadvantaged people have a decent home) have joined to build the first community printed in 3D in the world, this coming summer, in a semi-rural place in El Salvador that has not yet been released.

The ambitious project plans to provide housing for more than 50 families in a small community made up mainly of farmers and palm weavers, often living in multigenerational households and typically on less than $ 200 a month.

The following images are from the pilot home built in Austin …

The project revolves around single-family homes built in 3D in sizes from 55 to 74 habitable square meters, on land of 120 m2, and built in 48 hours. The tests carried out show values of $ 4,000 per unit, using local materials.

New Story's goal is to print the first community of homes for disadvantaged families in El Salvador in the next 18 months, and then, through partnerships, increase the production of houses to serve other communities in the next few years.

The house has state-of-the-art materials tested according to the most recognized standards of safety, comfort and resistance.

"We have created customization areas and options where families can choose combinations to help them personalize their homes."

According to Brett Hagler, CEO of New Story… “We feel it is our responsibility to challenge traditional methods and work to end the homelessness that exists throughout the world. With solutions based on 3D construction, we can reach more families with real homes, and much faster.

With the prototype made in Austin. The mobile printer is designed to operate with near zero waste and to work under unpredictable constraints - limited water, power, and labor infrastructure - to address housing shortages in underserved communities around the world.

And while we are here, it is of interest to recall the article that recounts Brad Pitt's initiative to rebuild a New Orleans neighborhood destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. With sustainable homes designed by great architects such as Frank Gehry, who also provide the plans for the 28 projects.
