Do we need more underground bike garages?

I do not think it is a mystery to venture into saying that even if you do not want to, you will soon have a bicycle at home if you live in the big city or you will have the appropriate license of a community bicycle service and of course you will need a garage when we move through the city. The trends are clear, the big cities are ceasing to be a hotbed of cars in favor of other more sustainable transport systems, and of course the king is the bicycle.

New mobility formulas imply a change of thought in the infrastructures of cities that must be adapted to new needs (We recall the 12 ecological guidelines for sustainable cities), and we already have cities that do not want to be left behind, among them, the city of Utrecht in the Netherlands which has just opened the world's largest underground bicycle parking with a capacity for 12,500 Units. A mega bicycle garage big time!

But… Was this underground parking madness really necessary? If we investigate the numbers a bit and taking into account that the Dutch administrations have literally dedicated themselves to expelling cars from urban centers since the 70s. In the city of Utrecht alone there are 100,000 cyclists who move to work, school , the university … etc. But if we see the following graph, we will get a little more scared …

Currently the Netherlands has 22.5 million bicycles and more or less in inhabitants, about 17.1 million. So they touch on average almost 1.3 Bicycles per person. Actually, it is the country with the most bicycles per inhabitant in the world followed by Denmark, Japan, Belgium and China.

The new one underground bike station It is located in the central station of Utrecht. It has a space of 17,100 square meters with a current capacity to store 6,000 bicycles, and by the end of next year, another 6,500 Units will be reopened.

An article in The Guardian already announces discontent that although the space is apparently huge, soon parking will not be enough if current trends are followed. 43% of trips of less than 7.5 km in the Netherlands are made by bicycle, 5 years ago they were only 40%, so this method of transport is having a high growth in the population whose infrastructures must be adapted quickly. The management forecast is to run new underground car parks They intend to house some 33,000 bicycles by 2022.

Other cities also already have plans to install similar infrastructures, such as the city of Delft, which is building a parking lot for 5,000 or in Amsterdam, which has already started the excavation for a 7,000-unit center. Let's remember that we have an article of interest on how to implement a bicycle system in a city that is very interesting.

We must remember that this type of parking does take up a lot of space and other cities in the world have begun to implement others bicycle storage systems much more technological and that optimize space 100% as it can be in Japan with ECO Cycle car parks.

Are automated bicycle storage facilities in the subway and that in 8 seconds you have your bike perfectly parked. A technical marvel we are talking from a constructive and space-saving perspective.
