Wind resources map
The wind energy sector is on the rise like all the energies included in the field of renewables. Of course, they are palpable benefits for all and that of course we must take advantage of.
At this point, knowledge, training and digital resources are needed for our wind installations to produce maximum performance. Among all those tools necessary to develop a project, a map to assess wind potential for a given area, it is necessary.
As we will see later, we have public access to analyze the resources from a wind map worldwide, other Europe's wind potential map, but for Spain (with more precise data - obtaining time series), we had from the IDAE the wind atlas where to see the windy zones for power generation That no longer works!
We have been for a while without solving this problem in Spain, until now. This week, a new wind map of Spain where we can consult in more detail the wind resources for the Iberian Peninsula.
So let's see in more detail all the mapping on the potential of green energy…
1.- Spain wind map
Researchers at CENER (Centro Nacional de Energías Renovales) have developed a new online platform to consult data on wind resources in the Iberian Peninsula, at the microscale and mesoscale level.
New map to consult the wind energy potential of the Spanish territory
The new map to see the wind potential of Spain by municipalities, which we can consult from the Iberian Wind Map. Actually, the information and data base are from the European project ERA-Net Plus New European Wind Atlas (NEWA), but exposed in a more user-friendly way to understand the wind profile graphs.
In the event that the user is interested in extracting data from the wind maps Spain. The web platform allows downloading time series of wind, temperature, air density and pressure, for a period of 10 years (2009-2018), with hourly frequency and a resolution of 3 km x 3 km.
Together with the time series data, the user will receive a descriptive report of the meteorology at the selected point and microscale maps of different meteorological variables, georeferenced for the area of interest.

We can access the cartography of wind farms from HERE where there are also other maps for consultation on photovoltaic, hydraulic, solar thermal installations, etc.

2.- Europe wind resources map
As we have mentioned before, the European project ERA-Net Plus New European Wind Atlas (NEWA) has been analyzing the potential of geographic wind with correct topography for a long time analyzing wind energy in Europe.
For four years with more than 30 partners in the renewable energy sector and eight countries, they have been collaborating throughout Europe to create the European Wind Atlas that we can consult from HERE.
One of the main objectives of this wind atlas has been to develop an online cartography that will be used as a standard for assess wind conditions in Europe.
3.- Wind resources map worldwide
For analyze wind characteristics and its resources globally, we have to go to the famous Global Wind Atlas. A public access web-based online application where we can identify the wind zones for wind power generation practically anywhere in the world, and then perform the preliminary calculations.

The map provides free downloadable data sets based on modeling technologies and methodologies. In addition, users can download high-resolution maps from the wind energy potential for use in GIS tools, both globally and by country.
Spain's wind power activity has an important global weight in the renewable sector, we are one of the main exporting countries of wind turbines in the world. We must not waste this opportunity in the face of possible new projects in the territory.
