Consume with head

Responsible consumption

It is the first communication campaign of Fundación Entorno - BCSD Spain aimed at the consumer and which aims to be the first reference space on how each of us can lead a healthy and sustainable lifestyle, while saving in our day a day.

This campaign was born out of the concern of the companies that make up the Sustainable Style Forum, to convey their commitment to sustainability to consumers, at a time of maximum economic difficulty. Companies are aware that citizens need simple and practical information to improve their lifestyle and recommendations that make them consume in a different way while still feeling fabulous, living well and doing good.

Citizens also need to save and what better way to do it than by taking care of themselves and the environment, the measures that we propose will allow them to save, for example, the current VAT increase. The platform provides them with the necessary information, through an emissions and savings calculator.

Why should we be aware of consumption

If the world's population were to reach 9.6 billion people in 2050, it could take the equivalent of almost three planets to provide the natural resources needed to support today's lifestyles.

With the increased use of non-metallic minerals in infrastructure and construction, there has been a significant improvement in the material standard of living. The per capita "material footprint" of developing countries increased from 5 metric tons in 2000 to 9 metric tons in 2022.

Water

  • Less than 3% of the world's water is fresh (drinkable), of which 2.5% is frozen in Antarctica, the Arctic, and glaciers. Therefore, humanity must depend on 0.5 percent of all freshwater needs and human ecosystems.
  • Humanity is polluting river and lake water faster than nature can recycle and purify.
  • More than a billion people still do not have access to fresh water.
  • Excessive water use contributes to global water stress.
  • Water is free from nature, but the infrastructure required to supply it is expensive.

Energy

  • If people around the world switched to energy efficient light bulbs, the world would save $ 120 billion annually.
  • Despite technological advances that have promoted increased energy efficiency, energy use in OECD countries will continue to increase by another 35% by 2022. Commercial and residential energy use is the second largest growth area. rapid use of energy in the world, after transportation.
  • In 2002, the fleet of motor vehicles in OECD countries was 550 million vehicles (75% of which were personal vehicles). A 32% increase in vehicle ownership is forecast by 2022. At the same time, the number of kilometers traveled by motor vehicles is projected to increase by 40% and global air travel to triple in the same period.
  • Households consume 29% of the world's energy and consequently contribute 21% of the resulting CO2 emissions.
  • The share of renewable energies in final energy consumption reached 17.5% in 2015.

Food

  • While significant environmental impacts of food occur in the production phase (agriculture, food processing), households influence these impacts through their food choices and habits. Consequently, this affects the environment through food-related energy consumption and waste generation.
  • Every year, an estimated one-third of all food produced - equivalent to 1.3 billion tonnes worth around $ 1 trillion - ends up rotting in consumer and retail containers, or spoiling due to poor practices. of transport and collection.
  • 2 billion people around the world are overweight or obese.
  • Land degradation, declining soil fertility, unsustainable water use, overfishing, and degradation of the marine environment are diminishing the ability of the natural resource base to supply food.
  • The food sector accounts for about 30 percent of the world's total energy consumption and accounts for about 22 percent of total greenhouse gas emissions.
