Energy efficiency measures come into force for different products related to the home

Since January 1 of this year, the energy efficiency measures aimed at saving energy in products related to European households. We can identify that we live in a world of "electronic gadgets" whose trend in homes is the increase of electronic devices to satisfy the long list of needs of users eager for new technologies, remember the article «Internet of things«. From the EU they comment that …The guidelines are designed to improve competitiveness and reduce carbon emissions.

The entry into force of the energy efficiency guidelines that act on products of the home was a necessity to alleviate an energetic disorder in the online sale and in the most common devices that we can find in our homes, before the purpose of helping consumers save energy. Remembering that 85% of consumers in Europe take into account the energy label when buying.

What are the new energy efficiency measures that come into force?

It will be required to show energy labels when selling products online.

Until now, most of the products that we could find for sale on the net only showed the energy label class that was most interesting (Example … «Energy class A»). Now, all products must be identified (For example, A +, A ++, B or C) so that consumers when buying products can compare. The new regulation of energy labeling for the sale of products online replaces all the previous requirements. They will have to show the energy label in its entirety and legible, as well as close to the sale price, as is already the case with the products that we find in the shops on the streets.

As of September 26, 2015, the measure will also apply to water heaters and air conditioners.

I add a real example that we can identify on the Internet:

Cooking appliances must be identified with energy labels.

The gas fired ovens and range hoods kitchen will have to have an energy efficiency label according to the new regulations on energy efficiency. Until now, only electric ovens were sold with a label identifying the type of energy efficiency. The new energy label will be:

This measure follows the positive results obtained by the energy efficiency labels for electric ovens - In force since 2002 -, which has obtained savings of 230 Euros per household during the useful life of the electric ovens. This measure was highly anticipated by manufacturers to break the imbalance in online sales that existed between gas and electric ovens.

Mandatory nature of the «standby »on work or network devices.

Such as modems, receivers / decoders, televisions, printers, etc. They will have to offer a feature that switches the computer to a low power standby mode if no main task is performed automatically. Where a saving of 36 TWh is expected by 2022 (Equivalent to the energy consumption of 10 million homes).

Mandatory nature of «standby »in automatic coffee machines.

The new automatic coffee machines should have a function that switches the machine to a low consumption standby mode when not in use. From January 1, 2015 they will also have to change the standby / off modeafter a certain time, since some have functions that keep the coffee hot for some time.

The new provisions will have to comply with:

  • Household drip filter coffee machines with non-insulated jugs should switch to Standby mode automatically or in the 40th minute after the end of the last brew cycle.
  • Household drip filter coffee machines with insulated jugs (which keep the coffee at the right temperature and preserve its aroma, without further heating needs) have to switch to standby mode orafter 5 minutes.
  • Espresso machines must switch to standby / off modeJust after brewing, preheating, and cleaning are complete.

As an option, manufacturers may choose to offer functionality that allows consumers to disable the automatic standby / off switch.

Application of the regulations on energy efficiency of products will mean new benefits for the consumer and the environment.

These new measures that affect the energy efficiency of different products will benefit the consumer directly:

  • The consumer may compare and guide yourself on energy efficiency on products sold online.
  • Aenergy efficient gas oven (i.e. class A +) usually it will saveabout 180 Euros in its lifespan compared to a less efficient one (i.e. class D). This is similar to electric ovens where an A + product can save € 230 over the life of the product compared to a class D product.
  • The newmeasurements for network devices can save an average of 40euros per household per year, without affecting the performance of the device.
  • Taken together, according to EU data, these New savings measures aimed at the home will save an average of 45 Euros per year for each home in Europe.
  • The new measures implemented may reduce CO2 emissions by 15 million tons per year.

The legislation in force

To promote the energy efficiency of products, the European Union implemented two framework directives:

  • TheEcodesign Directive (2009/125 / EC) - To produce more energy efficient products.
  • TheDirective on energy labeling (2010/30 / EU) - Regulations through which the consumer can recognize the products in light of their energy behavior.
