Spain will not meet the renewable target for 2022 and it is the cheapest energy

First of all, you should recapitulate to remember what objectives were assigned for 2022. The so-called "20 -20-20" approved by the European Council in 2007 and put into practice through the Energy Efficiency Directive (EED). ) (EU, 2012), the summarized approach is:

• A 20% reduction in EU greenhouse gas emissions compared to 1990.
• A 20% share of renewable energy sources (RES - Renewable Energy Sources) in the gross final energy consumption of the EU.
• 20% saving of primary energy in the EU in consumption.

According to the analysis that the EEA (European Environment Agency) has made the forecasts for each Member State, By 2022 the EU is expected to reduce its gas emissions by at least 21% compared to 1990 levels, thus exceeding its goal of 20%.

On the other hand, in 2012, the final consumption of energy from renewable sources amounted to 14%, so the EU is also ahead of the planned path to reach 20% of renewable energy in 2022. Likewise, energy consumption of the EU is declining faster than necessary to reach the energy efficiency target by 2022.

In order to meet the target of increasing the share of renewable energy sources to 20% of gross final energy consumption by 2020, the EU adopted the DirectiveEU, 2009b (On Member States' efforts to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions) as part of the climate and energy improvement package. The 20% target is legally binding and, at the same time, a code is also established for each member of the EU. The national objectives can be seen in the following table:

According to Hans Bruyninckx, Executive Director of the EEA. “Even in the context of the economic recession of recent years, the policies and the measures taken are working and, indeed, they have been vital in achieving this interim result. However, there is no room for complacency; The analyzes that we publish today indicate that there are also countries and sectors in which progress has been less than expected«.

Member States' progress by 2022 on climate and energy targets:

As we can identify in the image, one of the biggest concerns of the EU is the difference, in advance, between the different countries. As the report cites the exposed report, as a summary:

In reducing CO2 emissions:

Spain, Germany, Luxembourg, Poland, Austria, Belgium, Finland and Ireland "They are not on track to meet their objectives" 2022 so they will have to make an effort and apply new measures to achieve the goal. With direct default risk for Bulgaria, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands and Slovenia.

With reference to the increase in the renewable energy sector:

Portugal, Ireland and Spain have not achieved the target set in their national plan for 2012 and therefore shows insufficient progress to reach the 2022 goal.

Regarding energy efficiency and savings:

Spain is among the 17 countries that have achieved a reduction in their energy consumption sufficient to reach the 2022 target.

We can see the forecasts in numbers in the following box, and I already mentioned that a negative score is not encouraging at all. (To see all the countries, go to Pages 54-55)

But the most frustrating thing is the latest news confirming that wind power is the cheapest. From theEldiario.es (HERE) where… "Three investment banks (Morgan Stanley, UBS and Lazard) have stated that renewables are already competitive today in many applications without the need for any financial support and without even taking into account the enormous social and environmental benefits they bring."

We can admit that we do not believe much of the banks, but if we read the news of the Theguardian.com (HERE) with the groundbreaking title of "Wind energy is the cheapest energy, according to an EU analysis" We are beginning to take things seriously, and more so, if we access the report issued by the EU that confirms the aforementioned, called … "EU Energy Subsidies and Costs."
