Ecological cement that pollutes less

Table Of Contents

The cement industry it has always been in the midst of climate change. Cement is a fundamental component in the economies of many growing countries, a necessary element for the construction of buildings and roads. Reason why 80% of the cement produced today is used in developing countries. Only China uses 40% of world production and in Ukraine it doubles the manufacture of cement every few years.

Ecological cement

But making cement involves issue a large amount of CO2 into the atmosphere, cement plants produce five percent of global carbon dioxide emissions, the main cause of global warming. In addition, it has other drawbacks and that is that cement cannot be recycled, therefore each new building or infrastructure needs new cement.

For some years now, the European Union has subsidized western companies buy outdated cement plants in poor countries and enable them with green technology. But these technologies can only reduce 20% of CO2 emissions, so environmental impact continues to be a problem.

However, everything may change soon. Various companies in their commitment to sustainability have developed a new generation of cements that are respectful with the environment that allow to almost completely reduce the direct CO2 emissions to the atmosphere. To achieve this, limestone has been replaced as a raw material by solid waste from thermal power plants.

With this new production technique, a triple objective has been achieved: to carry out effective waste management through recycling, to contribute to the preservation of the planet's natural resources and to avoid the direct emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, through the elimination of the calcination of the raw material. At the same time, the technology developed makes it possible to reduce energy demand by approximately half in the synthesis process of cement.

In this way, the new generation of ecological cements represents a revolution in the current production model, which will contribute significantly to alleviating the harmful effects on the environment derived from the activity of the cement industry. This project is part of Tecnalia's objective of contributing to the innovative technology development to an economy based on sustainable development.
