The renewable energy sector in numbers

Sometimes it is difficult to assume the situation of a country in relation to renewable energy sector given the amount of information, both positive and negative news that we can find in the different media for the same territory.

Remembering, the concept of infoxication protected in the famous Pommer law … “A person's opinion can change after reading information about it on the Internet. The nature of the change is such that one goes from having no opinion to having a wrong opinion ”… This is called Infoxication”.

We wanted to show the reality of renewable from the perspective of numbers to be able to debate possible contradictions, with documents and information in hand.

The path of renewables in the last 5 years

IRENA (International Renewable Energy Agency) celebrates its fifth year of operations. The last five years have seen a dramatic change in the world energy. The dashboard below provides a 5-year snapshot of this global energy transition, and looks forward to what needs to be accomplished in 2030 by numbers.

The data can be consulted from IRENA at this link.

The main milestones reached in renewables worldwide

  • In 2015, coal and gas captured less than half the investment capacity of renewables last year.
  • Compared to 2015, renewables increased the world's power generation capacity more compared to other technologies combined.
  • For the first time, investments in renewable energy in developing countries led by China and India (19% more in 2015) surpassed developed countries (8% less).

  • Total world record of $ 286 Billion invested in renewable energy last year; makes $ 2.3 Billion for 12 years.

  • If we look at the industrialized countries, for example, investments in Europe fell by 21%, from $ 62 Billion in 2014 to $ 48.8 Billion in 2015, the lowest percentage on the continent for nine years despite investments records in wind projects - offshore. The United States rose 19% ($ 44.1 Billion) and investments in Japan were roughly the same as last year at $ 36.2 Billion.

Information pertaining to the synthesis of the "Global Trends in Renewable Energy Investment" (Beware! When 1 Billion is indicated, it is actually a Billion) prepared by Frankfurt School - UNEP Center and Bloomberg New Energy Finance.

Renewables in numbers bycountries

Once the state of the energy sector of the renewables globally, we have to delve into the numbers by countries. The data on electricity generation capacity with renewable energies shown in these tables (Here - Which are relative to ten years, from 2006 - 2015) represent the maximum net generation capacity of power plants and other facilities that use renewable energy sources to produce electricity.

  • The numbers accompanied by the letter "o" are figures that have been obtained from official sources, such as national statistical offices, government departments, regulators and electricity companies.
  • The letter "u" accompanies figures that have been obtained from unofficial sources, such as industry associations and news articles.
  • The letter "e" accompanies numbers that have been estimated by IRENA from various data sources. All data from the IRENA questionnaire are presented without any indicator.

As an example, we are going to investigate the energy reality of the last 10 years of Spain.

We no longer have any excuse to know exactly the energy situation in each country.
