The grey waters They are those that go down the drains of bathtubs, sinks, kitchen sinks, dishwashers or washing machines. These waters, with a simple treatment, can be easily reused for a variety of uses. The most common of these uses is to use it to fill toilet cisterns, which do not require high-quality water. But they can also be used for other uses, such as watering green areas or cleaning exteriors.

Gray water treatment, a big saving

With a system that allows the reuse of gray water from a house in the cisterns, it is possible to save about 50 liters per person per day. This supposes, in an average family of four people, an average saving of about 200 liters per day, or, what is the same, between 24 and 27% of daily consumption of the house. But if this system is implemented in hotels or sports facilities, the amount of water saved increases up to 30%. Gentlemen builders, architects, responsible for urban policies, keep the concept in your head: gray water.

Recycle gray water

The idea is extend the life cycle of water as much as possible in homes reusing it. Logically, the system is more expensive to install in houses already built, but not so much in new buildings. It only requires connecting the drains of sinks and bathtubs to a tank where two purification treatments would be carried out: a physical one, using filters that would prevent the passage of solid particles, and another chemical, in which the water would go through a chlorination process by means of an automatic dispenser and it would be ready to be reused.

Greywater treatment at home

It is essential for the system to be efficient, to correctly calculate the size of this tank, achieving a balance between the space used and the capacity to process water from it. For single-family homes a deposit of between 0.5 and 1 cubic meter. For hotel facilities you can install one or more 25 cubic meter tanks. The location is usually the basement of the building or, in some cases, the roof, in which case the distribution to the cisterns would be easier taking advantage of the force of gravity.

Maintenance of the entire greywater system is limited to an annual check of the filters and the chlorination system. A considerable saving of water and without changing the habits of life.
