While organic foods are natural, the same cannot be said the other way around. However, this statement is not entirely true either, as organic certification is based on a system that allows exceptions that alter the product. In this Green Ecologist article, we explain what are the differences between organic and natural foods.

Main difference between organic and natural food

Ideally, an organic product is a guarantee that a product is natural, understanding the term as the absence of artificial alterations in its cultivation, breeding or processing. By contrast, when the term natural is used in a label, nothing guarantees that it really is.

When assessing how natural is an organic product we must bear in mind that certifications are granted to products that meet a certain normative, which in many occasions means a certain margin of permissiveness in the use of chemical products such as pesticides to face situations that have not been able to be solved with ecological methods or simply because they are included in the list of pesticides, antibiotics, growth hormones, etc. allowed.

Therefore, in practice there may be natural products that are organic without having certification and products with their logo that, having it, are not actually entirely natural.

Although certification does not guarantee a total absence of chemicals, for practical purposes it is very useful to distinguish between organic products, -although within a flexible term-, and those others that are simply sold as natural because they are not processed, be fresh, without more, or without preservatives.
